A real person — not an AI

Someone to talk to. Every week.

I'm Harlan. Once a week we meet by video and simply talk — about your week, your family, the garden, the news, or nothing in particular. We can read a book together if you'd like that. There's no agenda and nothing to download. Just someone who's glad to see you.

No card required. If it's not the right fit, there's nothing to cancel.

What we do

A Chapter Together is an online companionship service that pairs older adults with warm, screened companions for weekly one-on-one video visits.

Sessions combine conversation, storytelling, and shared reading to reduce loneliness and create meaningful social connection. Every companion is background-checked, interviewed, and trained. Families get a short check-in note after each visit so they know how their parent is doing.

Older adults feel lonely

According to the 2024 National Poll on Healthy Aging, roughly one in three adults aged 50–80 report feeling isolated. Loneliness is now recognized as a serious public health concern.

29%

Higher risk of heart disease

Studies from the American Heart Association link chronic loneliness in older adults to significantly higher rates of heart disease, stroke, and dementia.

Minutes that change a day

Regular, meaningful contact — even briefly — measurably improves mood, cognition, and sleep. It's often the highlight of the week for our members.

How it works

Simple enough for anyone. Warm enough to matter.

You set it up in five minutes. We take care of everything after that.

01

Tell us about you

A short form: your name, what you enjoy, how you'd prefer to connect. It takes about five minutes.

02

Meet a companion

We meet by video and simply say hello. The first visit is free — no card, no commitment.

03

Meet weekly

Same day, same time, every week. We talk, we read together if you'd like, and it grows into something real over the months.

04

You hear how it went

A short, warm note after each visit lets you know how they were doing — and gives you something real to bring up next time you call.

Ways we help

Different visits for different chapters.

Every relationship is different. So is every visit. Here's what we can offer.

Reading sessions

Our signature service. A book of your choosing, read aloud, with pauses for conversation and reflection. Ideal if you love books — or if you'd just like a gentle way into good conversation.

"After Dad passed, my father-in-law stopped talking much. His companion has him telling stories again. That means everything."

A note from Harlan

Why this exists

I built A Chapter Together because loneliness responds to two things: real connection with another person, and a steadier relationship with your own mind. I've spent fifteen years practicing meditation and a lifetime watching people I love get quieter as the world got smaller around them. This service is my attempt to change that — one weekly hour at a time.

Every companion we bring on is someone I would trust with my own mother. That's the standard. If it doesn't feel right for your family in the first session, you don't owe us a thing.

— Harlan Moore, founder

Questions families ask

Everything you're probably wondering.

Is the first session really free?

Yes. The first session is free with no card required. If it's not a good fit, there's nothing to cancel and nothing to pay.

My parent isn't very tech-savvy. Will this work?

Most families use Zoom or FaceTime, and we send a simple one-tap link before each session. If needed, we'll do a short setup call so everything works before the first visit. Many members quickly grow to love the routine.

Are companions background-checked?

Yes. Every companion completes a background check, an in-person interview, and training on working warmly with older adults before they meet a single member. We match for personality, interests, and pace of conversation.

What if my parent has memory issues?

Yes. We work with many people who have early-stage memory challenges. Our companions are trained in gentle, reassuring conversation and never rely on anyone's ability to remember prior sessions. If more clinical care is needed, we'll say so honestly.

If I'm booking for someone else, can you send me updates?

Yes — with their permission. After each session you'll receive a short, warm note. It's not a clinical report, more the kind of update a friend might send. Enough to know how they were, and often enough to give you something real to bring up next time you call.

Where in the world do you work?

We currently serve families in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. If you're elsewhere, get in touch — we're expanding.
